I regularly use Gmail as a niche research tool simply by formatting Gmail as a word processor, copying/pasting and testing misc. niche content into Gmail emails. Surprisingly, Gmail is a great tool for finding Unique specialty products & niches that very few are promoting.
On the Gmail Advertising side of the business, few Gmail advertisers seem to hit their target and most campaigns are just Not well focused!

This has got to be one of the best reports out there on Adwords.
I was also wondering about those ads when I check my mails and wondered how I too can advertise like they do. In fact, I even clicked on some of the ads to see what they had to offer.
I also thought those guys must be spending huge amounts on those ads. After reading this – Boy was I wrong!
This is a straight to the point, no mucking around and untapped marketing resources for newbies and experienced marketers.

Just finished reading your Gmail Advertising report, for the second time, to make sure I have not missed anything.
First let me say I like your writing style, it is relaxed and easy to read. Despite using Gmail for a long time now, I had not really thought about the adverts, or their use. A case of something hiding in plain sight – in this case a brilliant opportunity to get your message in front of a highly targetted audience.
